Stop Screeching and Start Playing! How to Fix What's Wrong With Women's Tennis

As the tennis Grand Slam season progresses, it's obvious that there are two major problems with women's professional tennis, and it's time that we, the fans who shell out our hard-earned money for tickets or who go out of our way to tune in wherever we are in the world, are treated to much better tennis matches. But how can we fix these problems and make women's tennis enjoyable again?

Problem #1: the eardrum-splitting, deafening decibel level of shrieks and screams that several of the women seem to feel is a vital part of the game. This is such a turn-off that many fans have begun to wear earplugs or mute the sound in order to watch the match, both of which surely take a great deal away from the fans' overall experience. Such outlandish noise is completely unnecessary, and each occurrence should result in some sort of financial penalty. Only when their bottom line is affected will these "ladies" get the screeching under control and enable fans to enjoy the matches again.

Problem #2: the fact that in Grand Slams, the women earn the same prize money as the men for doing a fraction of the work. This is patently unfair to the men, who have to win 3 out of 5 sets, and it is even more unfair to the spectators, who get far less tennis for their money.

How can we fix this second problem? There are two possible solutions: either make the women win 3 out of 5 sets whenever the men have to do so, or award them 3/5 of the men's prize money and charge spectators 3/5 of the ticket price they would pay for a men's match. Think of all the astonishing comebacks and unforgettable matches that would never have happened if the men only had to win 2 out of 3 sets. Let's give the women - and their fans - the same opportunities to enjoy spectacular comebacks and memorable matches.

Until these two problems are resolved, we, the fans and spectators, should think long and hard about how we support women's professional tennis. If you also feel strongly that women's tennis has room for improvement, why not contact the International Tennis Federation at http://www.itftennis.com and let them know that, as a fan, you'd like to see some changes made to the game? We can make women's tennis watchable again, but only if the players, sponsors, and tournament administrators understand just how unhappy their fan base is.
